Riley’s Rider Recap: Riders Vs Lions II

STATEMENT GAME! Wow what a performance by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. It was their most complete game in at least two and a half seasons. The entire team fed off the amazing energy that was radiating off of the New Mosaic crowd right from opening kickoff. It was the most consistently loud crowd ever at New Mosaic. The team executed the game plan perfectly and looked like the team everybody thought they could be at the start of the season.

The offense was clicking on all cylinders pretty much right from the start against the Lions. KG looked pretty good hey Rider nation? I think he shut up doubters in Riderville (for now) with a very well played game. The O-line held very well and gave Kevin Glenn enough time to make good reads all night long. They also established a running game that opened up throwing lanes using play action passes. It was a very well executed game plan by the Riders offense.

Ed. Gainey. Wow that was a performance of a life time for the Rider defensive half back. The four interceptions he had is a new Rider single game record. He was all over the field and an absolute ball hawk. The rest of the Rider defense played great as well. The D-line got pressure and it seemed like the Riders blitzed more than any other game this season and the DB’s stood up to the task. Look what happens when the Riders win the turnover battle. 7-1 was the turnover margin and it was an amazing game put together by the Riders defense. It makes me feel good that this defense stepped up and played their best game in two years because they have taken a lot of heat especially in the defensive backfield.

Special Teams

They didn’t get the score on special teams but they once again did very well in the return and coverage game. Christion Jones almost broke multiple punt returns in the game and it looks like we have found a pure returner that can change the game in one play. Hopefully in Edmonton the Specials can finally get a score that they have worked so hard to achieve this season.

The Riders won the turnover battle and all three phases of  the game and we saw what this team can be when they are all on the same page and playing with confidence. I hope this is the game that finally shows this team that they are capable of playing with the big boys and gets them to start playing road games with confidence like they do at home. The next step is a road win against the Edmonton Eskimos after having a bye this week. If the Riders can pull a win off in Edmonton this team could do big things in the second half of the season.
